Survival… we are all on this earth, born with survival instincts. If you’re breathing, we know we have been going through tough times. When COVID hit, many were severely affected by losing their job. I was one of them. It was a tough time. Living on savings wasn’t the business for me.
My grandmother raised me with good standards. She was always frugal and about saving her money. That is why she had substantial income and ended up with 3 homes. No one knew she was a woman with means. She liked to keep it that way. From the way she dressed and cars she drove. She always said, she can go out and get a Mercedes or Lexus but no. Being smart with your money is the reason why you have money.
We lived in one of the wealthiest counties in America. She would peruse with the wealthy in guess what… thrift shops. Yes, the wealthy love thrift shops. My grandmother is a social animal. She would talk to them while browsing through the thrift shops. She would always say the reason why these people are wealthy is because they’re very frugal. They love to thrift, shop on clearance. Know how to negotiate, find the best bargain. They love to save, not spending beyond their means. Sure, they live in wealthy areas, but they don’t spend extravagantly on high end products. They’re not in Macy’s or Nordstrom. They love the local thrifts. Wearing the same clothes over and over. They love saving.
I hold these principles to heart. Always build up your savings. I check my bank account every day. I plan. Faithfully, I account for my income and expenses each month. It may be my business background. I am built to run a global corporation.
I have an MBA, I am taught to think on a deep level. Analyzing and always thinking about making the right decisions. When I am in a store, I am analyzing everything. From sale items, shelf positions, store layout, design, employees, store cleanliness, and customer service.
This helps my thought process; I love analyzing everything. Understanding the psychology of it all. What are people putting in their baskets. Where are the high traffic areas in the store. Why are items being markdown, is it to increase branding and revenue? I paid my way through school; I want a return on investment.
I love the supermarkets the best. I understand the nuances of it all. From resetting the shelf, from tags/labels, to design. You ever wonder why eggs/milk are usually found in the back of the store? It’s strategic. The stores want you to go through the entire store, not just the front and bounce. Why? They can generate more sales.
Have you ever gone by the cereal aisle and see your childhood favorite on sale? Yes, Tony the Tiger and Trix Rabbit staring at you let alone, your kids! I bet you weren’t thinking of purchasing. Somehow, those boxes end up in your basket.
Let’s not talk about the checkout lane. Ah… we see Brad Pitt and our beloved royal family going strong on the covers. We also see those gummi bears, snickers and M&M’s, just yearning to be between our teeth. This is called impulse buying. These items are positioned strategically.
The markets know you will be standing and waiting, looking around. What better way than to entice you with everyone’s favorite snacks! Once those hunger pains start, those bags end up on the belt. It’s called impulse.
The more you’re positioned in front of the product, the higher the chance you will buy it. Stores like to put general necessities that are frequently bought in the back. They know there is a high chance you’re picking up bread, eggs or milk. You have to walk your way through other products to get them. This helps with sales.
Now.. I went at length to tell you my personal story. I write most of these articles based on my personal life. Essentially, I have experienced all of these issues including shift work. Yes, this is what this article is all about. I previously wrote about another money making avenue surveys. Something to do in your downtime. Now, it’s time to present another money making avenue, shift work.
The whole goal is to help you to survive. I don’t want anyone to suffer. I am helping someone right now to get on their feet. I am taking my personal downtime to do this. Coaching and sending money making avenues their way.

I will continue to preach emergency funds and building savings. I want this to be a part of everyone’s brain. I can’t stress this enough. Yes, I know we love our Starbucks and McDonalds. Sometimes we have to discipline ourselves and forgo things we love. It’s all worth it! Trust, having money in the bank is the best safety net you can bargain for. You can always go back to things you love.
My recommendation, set financial goals for yourself. I will use my personal example. Yes, I have a goal of saving over $20,000 in 2026. For 2027, $35,000. For 2028, $40,000. I have objectives. Continue to do work in other avenues outside of my primary job. Shiftwork/part time jobs.
I have been hitting this goal, working shifts (at minimum 2) per week. I use 6 different shift sites. Why you may ask? It broadens the opportunities available.
Factors You Have To Think Of Before Booking A Shift
Yes, planning. If you read this site, you’re going to know planning is the recommendation. You have to have goals. Let’s start with a list.
WHY I WANT TO BOOK SHIFT(S):
Why do I want to work shifts? Is it for extra money (build savings) or to help with an emergency expense (get my car out of the shop)? Are you planning a dream wedding? Having a financial crisis due to an unexpected health emergency? In school and need something to help with the books/food? Looking for extra income to support a well-deserved vacation?
Sit down and think, why do you want extra money. Write it down. Store it as goals. When you write down, you’re more than likely to hit the goals.
This is what I do. I already mentioned my goals. I have them written down with objectives. This helps me stay disciplined to keep on doing this type of work part-time. It also led me to find another part-time opportunity that I will present in a separate article!
Another Part-Time Opportunity, Acosta Jobs
Before I do, I want you to check out Acosta Jobs. I was hired in 3 days after applying! I couldn’t believe it, I did it on a whim! I applied and next day got a call. 2 days later, I was hired, working as retail merchandiser for Walmart. I have my choice of up to 35 hours. I can go to 40 if I want!
I will talk about it in separate article. For now, I wanted to present as another avenue. Search retail merchandiser or general labor. Search your surrounding areas. Check out opportunities. They are hiring!
HOW MUCH MONEY DO I WANT TO EARN?
I stress budgeting all the time. You should always have a plan/goal together. Especially finances! Figure out how much money (income) you want to make. Do I want to earn $200 or $500 per week? This will help to determine the amount of shifts you work per week.
AVAILABLE SHIFTS
With shift work, you have to account for what is available at the moment. It depends upon your region and demand. Depending upon the stores, there may be more jobs available during certain seasons (incumbent upon the projects at the time). An example, WalMart. They may extend shifts during the Christmas season to keep up with higher demand and foot traffic. The job at hand may entail stocking shelves, reset merchandise (making sure product is tagged on correct area, shelf and price label according to planogram), organizing/cleaning areas, assisting customers.
Some hiring organizations need consistent shifts to be filled. I will give an example. A 3rd party distributor needs workers to fulfill shift work, distributing totes to be distributed to different areas. Instead of hiring full time workers, they believe it would be better to hire 6-8 different independent contractors to fulfill the jobs. This way, they can split the cost between 6-8 people (than hiring 1-2 people) and get things done faster. They don’t have to worry about extending benefits and higher salary.
I use 6 different apps because of these factors. I don’t know what will be available with each of them. Some apps offer more shifts than others. It depends on your region and distance. For instance, if you work in the south, you may have more shift opportunities than those in the North.
SKILLS
Skills and job experience is crucial for the shifts you can work. Just remember, even with your first job, your skills remain ingrained with you. Many of these shifts are manual/ general labor, meaning not hard to perform.Not requiring a lot of skills, just a hard work ethic!
These are immediate jobs, many offering on the spot training. For some, you have to have a little experience, especially if the job requires critical skills to work. For example, fork lift drivers. I never worked a fork lift and if a shift requires a fork lift driver, I have to pass. You have to have experience and a license. It’s not something you can learn right on the spot.
Never fear, many shifts are easy to work. You would consider manual labor. If you’re a quick learner, you will do well. That is what I am. Plus, I have done so many jobs in my lifetime, it’s easy for me to catch on. Plus, I read the job description. Try to understand what the overall goal of the shift work entails. With an MBA, I understand the nuance of it all.
I will give an example. A Shift requires you to reset the cooler. That is moving products around to different display cases or shelves so that they move better (sales). You will receive a planogram, and move items according to it. It’s all to generate more sales.
Resetting Cooler Example
For instance, move the dunkin donut coffee to display case 8, and shelf 3. Move the lipton ice tea to display case 1, shelf 1. Why are we doing this? It’s summer. When customers come in, they will go to display case 1 before display case 8. Moving left to right. I know customers will be eyeing the cold/summer beverages over fall/winter theme beverages. I want to move my cold beverages towards the prime spots to generate sales. I will move the coffee beverages towards the end. Why? These beverages generate less sales during the summer.
On a deep level, I understand stores move product around with the goal to generate more sales. We are in business to generate sales. If not, we can’t account for payroll, marketing and other general expenses. We have to make money. Yes, on a deep level it’s about providing products/services that satisfy the consumer’s needs. On a real level, we have to account for a profit to do so. We need money to keep these products on the shelves, keep the lights on. It’s all about a balance.
If the summer is coming up, it would make sense to have my “prime sellers” out in front. Why? To generate sales. I wouldn’t hide watermelons and oranges in the back. No way, they are out in front. Let’s move the peanut butter and hot cocoa towards the back. Plus, I will have more stock on hand for watermelon.

DISTANCE
You also have to account for the distance you’re willing to travel. I will be upfront, many shifts require traveling a distance. Especially if you live up north. I am used to traveling, it doesn’t bother me. You do have to account for wear and tear on your car and gas. Also, the commute. If traveling by car, traffic. If you live in the NY area, you know about traffic at certain times. It can be a bummer. Sometimes, after I complete a shift, I will browse TJ Maxx or Walmart. Why? I don’t want to be stuck in traffic, burning up gas. I might as well use that time browsing for a bargain. I will wait until traffic dies down, less gas I am burning.
If you don’t have a car, can you get to the location by bus,train or Uber? Plan in advance so you don’t get stuck. Have a backup plan on hand. If you miss the bus, can you uber to the shift.
Factor by planning. If paying for gas outweighs the pay, you may reconsider. It all depends.
Sometimes, you may have to forgo and work anyway. Do you need job experience or have to fulfill an obligation to work? You have to plan this all out.
To recap, account for reliable transportation, distance (traffic/tolls), gas, and wear and tear on your transportation. Plan this out as many shifts require reliable transportation. They are depending on you to show up. If you’re unsure on transportation, I wouldn’t book a shift. Booking a shift then having to cancel is a red flag. It incorporates unreliability, affecting your ratings on the gig sites. You don’t want any negative strikes and having your account suspended/deactivated, preventing more shifts to be booked. Never have anything mess up your source of income.
DATE/TIME
What is your schedule looking like? Are you in school or working full/part time? I will take myself for example. I am already working between 30-35 hours a week with my primary job. Traveling a lot. I have to plan for my variable schedule each week.
I look for shifts on my days off. That limits me but I have been lucking out by securing 1-2 shifts per week. How? By using 6 different shift jobs, scouring for opportunities on those days.
CANCELLATION
Yes, sometimes shifts are canceled. The shift may be filled by other workers or the organization may have retracted the job. You have to account for this. What I do is move on to another opportunity or have a back up one in mind.
What I personally do, is take an hour and jot down all the shifts I am available to work. I note the date, time, location, details of the shift and expected compensation. That way, if one shift cancels, I can move on to the other (hopefully it is available and try to book). Always have a back up plan.
Plan in advance (in case a shift is cancelled). Answer, will I be alright if the shift is canceled? Can I pick up another shift? If I was depending upon that compensation, how can I make up for the lost income. Work additional few shifts the following week/month?
The goal is to not let you down. Be upfront about the whole shift work process. If you know in advance, it will soften the blow. Never be disappointed, it’s not you. Sometimes things change. Just think, other opportunities will pop up.
Personally, I had a number of cancellations or not approved (job was filled by someone else). I didn’t sweat it, I applied to the other opportunities. I found shifts that were more up my alley. The key, I always found another shift. How? By planning and conducting the steps previously outlined. I recommend you do the same. Use more than one app and get hip to the available shifts. Those apps will be incoming below.
HOW TO OVERCOME NOT APPROVED
Sometimes, you have to apply or submit a bid for a shift.That is ok. Part of the process. If you’re not approved, don’t take it to heart. Perhaps your skills didn’t align with the position or was shift was previously filled. What you can do is apply to another shift and keep searching/applying. It happens. The key, not to take it personally. It isn’t you. There are other job seekers applying to the same shifts. All with the same goal in mind. It’s competitive. Keep searching and applying! You will find shift work.
GLOWING RESUME/PROFILE/BACKGROUND CHECK
Yes, you are asked to upload your resume (ensure your skills align with the position). Also, you’re asked to fill out a profile. Make sure it’s completely filled out. It shows that you pay attention to detail and are professional. Also, complete your background check. Make sure you have all your necessary documents in order. This includes a driver’s license, passport, social security card, green card, or birth certificate. Yes, the legal paperwork to verify if you’re able to work.

Prepare For Background Checks
Make sure there aren’t any outstanding blemishes on your records. Many of these organizations conduct a thorough investigation to make sure you’re an upstanding citizen. You will be handling their equipment and will be in their offices, they don’t want any security issues. They don’t want you walking out the door with their $4,000 products or causing a ruckus with other workers.
You don’t have to be so concerned if you have a few issues on your record. Don’t let this stop you from conducting a background check. I just want you to be prepared to answer in case they ask a question about your record. You can let them know the situation, you have since learned your lesson from this situation and vouch, this will never happen again. Spin it to a positive.
You don’t have to worry as many of these hiring organizations are very lenient. They haven’t been stringent. I am not sure as I have no issues with my background checks. I have a squeaky clean record. I can’t speak from experience.

Maintain Professionalism At All Times While Doing Shifts, More Opportunities
Maintain professionalism and a positive attitude at all times. Know the details of the job and make sure you comply with the hiring organizations expectations. Follow everything they say and go the extra mile.
They are watching you. They will be evaluating your performance and reporting to the gig sites that hired you. They will give you a rating. Ratings matter. Why? It helps to provide more shift work.
If you have an outstanding record, other hiring organizations will want to send job opportunities your way. A great reputation, how can I get you on board today!
I take myself for example. One of the hiring companies I work for has me on their preferred list. They have been automatically sending me jobs on a periodic basis. I have nothing but glowing reviews. Since the reviews, I have noticed a lot more shifts have been sent to me. This has been a great blessing.
I love having more opportunities because I love having a safety crutch. I never know if I will be without work. I have shift work as a plan B if anything happens.The more experience and more reviews you have, the more opportunities you will have.
Show Up On Time
Show up on time. On time means at least 15-20 minutes before the shift. You will have to do some house cleaning, meaning filling out sign in sheets and receiving instructions. It’s always good to show up to a job early, you’re more relaxed for the day. It shows professionalism!
Greet the manager with a smile and courtesy. Know the expectations. Ask if there is a sign in sheet. They will often let you know.
More than likely, you will be clocking in on the hiring app. Make sure you can clock in. If not, ask the manager if they can clock you in. On the job details, it will give you information on the clocking procedures. Make sure you know them. Ask the manager!
It is good to have a sign in sheet (as proof for work). That way, if an issue arises with compensation, you can refer to the sign in sheet. Have some proof that you worked the position with the hiring manager.
Comply With Instructions From The Manager
Know the manager(s). Take note of their name, in case you have to reach out to them or provide proof on the app about the job. Try not to ask too many questions. Why? They will be busy. Running around, giving instructions. Helping newcomers and working themselves. They want people who are quick and self-sufficient.
Don’t need to be micromanaged. It’s ok to ask questions, just not too many. It shows that you haven’t read job details or didn’t pay attention to their instructions. It’s a red flag.
When you’re doing these shifts, it’s all about time. Some of the work has to be done between certain time frames. Time is money. They expect you to keep it moving. You’re completing a task that has to be done at a certain time. Use your time wisely. Follow their instructions. If they say reach out to them with an issue, please do so. Don’t try to fix a problem on your own. Reach out to them. Know where they are in the area. You can ask, if i have a problem where can I reach out to you.
Give an example. You’re doing inventory scanning. Something goes wrong with the scanner. You wouldn’t try to fix it yourself. You wouldn’t want to mess up their $10,000 scanner. Reach out to one of the managers.
Often, you will hear instructions from the managers to try to concentrate on the job (basically, try not to speak to other workers), do so. We are all social animals but with these jobs, you often have to concentrate. Ask the manager what the expectations are.
Comply With The Organizations Rules Prevents Account Deactivation
When your browsing shifts, you will notice rules from the hiring organization. Also the gig site as well. It’s all about maintaining professionalism. Comply with them. Have it in your mind to make a commitment. These organizations are depending upon you to show up. If you’re unreliable and can’t make a shift, that puts them in limbo. They may think, could’ve hired someone else. The whole purpose is to have someone reliable to work on this special project. It has to be done by a certain time, I expect this many workers (independent contractors) to fulfill the job. If I don’t get this many, I will be put behind, costing money.
I will give an example. Lowes job I worked. They had a special project that had to be completed in a day, (done by 5 p.m.). It had to be done by this time to make the shipping time. What did I have to do? Assemble lawn mower, particularly, installing battery and chargers in the box. That was my part in the assembly line. I received instructions and once understood, got the ball rolling. I am good at assembling things. I am an interior decorator, I am always working around the house, constructing something. Plus, I know everything about a home and sell gutters as the main trade. I understand construction.
If I didn’t show up for the shift, Lowes would’ve been screwed. This would’ve cost them a day’s work. We don’t want to play with Lowes and money. We don’t want them to pass this cost to the products. No to higher prices for screws!
Once again, these hiring organizations are depending upon you. They expect you to show up ready to complete the shift. That is the purpose of booking the shift, correct? You want to work. Yes, things happen. Emergencies situations arise, but note, make sure it’s a true emergency and not an execuse. We are all human and some of us don’t plan. Even planning, you can make a goof. Perhaps you read the time wrong and may conflict with your full time job. You may have to cancel or negotiate with your full time job. This happens.
Make Sure You Have Correct Dates, Time/ Plan GPS Ahead Of Time
That is why I stress planning. Making sure you have a clear schedule, transportation and will be able to fulfill the job. Make sure you read the times right. Make note of p.m. and a.m.
I will give you aheads up, many shifts are overnight and early morning. This may call for a shift being from 2:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m. Yes, the overnight graveyard shifts. Take note. If your shift says Monday, 7/2/2026 at 2:00 a.m.- 7:00 a.m., make sure you’re leaving your house at 12:30 a.m. on Monday morning, not Tuesday.
It’s hard to get confused. Just remember, once 12 a.m. hits, it starts a new day…. 12 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. cycles for the am for that day. 12:00 p.m.-11:59 p.m. cycles for p.m. for that day.
If a shift says Monday ,7/5/2026 from 1:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. just remember, it’s in the a.m.’s for Monday. Another example. A shift is on Tuesday, 8/2/2026 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., you are working from 9 in the morning to 5 in mid afternoon on Tuesday, August 2.
I recommend writing it out, making sure you understand your time requirements. Say, Amba, I am working from 9 in the morning to 5 in the mid afternoon. Tom, I am working from 1 in the morning to 7 in the morning. You see what I am getting at.
Ring The Alarm
When doing shift work and many, it’s hard to get confused. You’re going to have different dates and times. I want you to have it organized and planned. So you can plan for your alarm. Have multiple. I have 3 phones and 3 ipads. I pick a few and set alarms on them. I am always afraid of waking up late. I make sure my devices are on but in standby/idle mode. Also a biggie, plugged into an electrical outlet. Never shut off your devices, you won’t be able to hear your alarm with your devices shut off. Another key, make sure your volume is on.

Iphone and Android, Where To Adjust The Volume
If you have an iphone, you have a small latch on the left (that turns off ringer/puts it in silent mode). Make sure silent mode is turned off, push the latch down. If you have an android, look for volume buttons on the right /left. Often you have to push all the way down to activate silent. Push all the way up to activate volume on.
I have a Motorola (although I am a primary iphone user) as a backup phone. I like knowing about everything so I can provide advice. That is my natural knack. You can go to settings, then scroll to sound & vibration, to activate volume. The goal, make sure the volume is on and loud to wake you up!
I will talk about smartphones, which are important in shift work. It will be outlined below under phone requirements. Make sure you read thoroughly!
Test your alarm, make sure volume is turned up. I turn mine to the highest. Also, test your alarm by setting it to a time closest to you. For example, if it’s 8:00 p.m. Set your alarm to 8:05 p.m.
If you have a regular alarm, make sure it’s plugged into an electrical outlet. Test it out.
I always test my alarm (the night before) to see if it is working correctly. For the sound, I set it to highest (make sure it’s not set to silent). If I can repeat it, I will. If I can set it to vibrate, I turn that on as well. Not all the time, but having it on as a safety measure doesn’t hurt!
I set my alarm for multiple times, not just one. For instance, I will set an alarm for 5:30 a.m., then 5:40 a.m. then 6:00 am.
I set it in increments, just in case I doze off, I can hear the next alert. I always set it to the earliest and latest my behind needs to be up. In this case, I am setting the highest 6:00 a.m., the latest I need to be up to make my shift on time.
Have The Correct Address Of The Shift
Also, have the correct address. Prep on GPS. Download an offline map. Write down the directions, in case your phone dies (if you don’t have a charger cord or charging port in the car).
Essentially, every car has a charge port. Keep extra charging cords in your glove department. That way, you will be set!
If you have GPS included in your car, program the directions ahead of time. Test. Save the directions. That way you’re ready.
When you read the location on the shift site, make note of the location details. When you program in GPS, another city may pop up. Often it’s the same city/area. What’s in GPS may go according to another map while the hiring location may go by another map.
I will give an example. On shift I book, it says Greensburg NY. On GPS, it says Harrisburg NY. I know NY and know areas often go by multiple names but essentially, the same area. What I do is go a step forward. If I am working on NAPA auto parts, I Google the address of the NAPA. I compare. If it says 105 Greensburg NY (matching what’s stated on shift site), I know it’s the same place. I have the correct location!
I look at surrounding streets and nearby locations. I compare what is disclosed on the GPS. Is Markinson Street adjacent to the location. If so, I have the correct location! What other places that are notable right by. Is it located next to a McDonalds or TJmaxx. Then I know, I have the right place. So when I arrive, I won’t panic. I know I have the right location.
Always Prep The GPS A Few Days Or Night Before
Always double check, look on the map. See what the location looks like. There are always pictures disclosed on GPS. No night or few days before. That way you can sleep soundly.
Never plan the day off. Just don’t get the address and program in. That’s a big no, no! If you arrive at the wrong location, that is devastating. Getting lost is another. Especially if there is traffic. You want to be calm, not alarmed. Prep before!
Many Shift Jobs Are Physical, Are You Ready
Many of these jobs are physical in nature. You will see, can you lift up to 35 lbs. This job requires a lot of bending and standing. You will see this a lot. Requiring physical movement. We don’t want you to end up in the hospital imobile. No one wants to be laying up in the hospital. You want to be enjoying life, hitting the fairs. We are meant to move, work and have fun. Not to be confined and immobile. That’s not living.
Prep your body beforehand. I know this as I spent countless years losing weight. I had to prep before I lifted weights. Yes, hipthrusting over 300 pounds for a woman, that is a proud accomplishment. I talk about this in articles, I know about the prep. I know it’s the same with doing physical labor. I lawn mow, rake, do a lot of physical work around the house. Lifting heavy ladders, equipment, I know the deal.
Stretching and prepping ahead will help. Comfortable quality sneakers. Especially if you will be on your feet most of the day. You want extra cushion and breathability, which helps alleviate pressure off your feet.
Periodically do leg lifts and rotations. Alternate lifting back of your leg. That takes pressure off your legs. Massage them periodically. Get blood flowing. That helps alleviate cramping and leg/foot pain. You don’t want to work in pain. No excuse to book a future shift!

Yes, you’re using an app to access shifts. Ofcourse, you have to have an updated phone with the latest ios (settings, general, software update) and for android users, system updates (settings, scroll system updates). For our iphone/ipad users, we are up to iOS 26.5.2. I am not sure what the threshold is, but your devices should be a few years old. Maybe 2024 and the latest. The gig site will let you know, once you try to start and download.
In the event, you want to have the latest phone regardless. I will recommend a cheap alternative to have. It’s always good to have a back up, especially a phone. We know how pricey an iphone and even some androids can be. We are talking about $1000 phones here. If one goes out of commission, do we have a spare $1000 to replace on a whim. For many, the answer is no. We have responsibilities, property taxes, bills, car maintenance, and so on.
Also, if you have an older iphone/android and can’t download the latest software, what can you do? No matter what, you can’t download the latest on an older phone. These companies have to make money. They construct your phones and devices that way. How else can they lure you to get the latest phone? If you’re phone isn’t worth the trade, what can you do?
Don’t panic, I have a cheap alternative that can help you. A cheap unlocked uptodate android phone. I know, I put a lot of technical language here, especially the unlocked. I know a lot of people don’t know the differences between a locked and unlocked phone. An unlocked phone means you’re not contracted to a mobile provider to provide a monthly service (phone, text, and data usage).
It can help save your life, especially if you don’t have the funds to replace a broken or older phone. Especially the iphone. That is a dud.
This can do until you can replace your iphone/android. You can either save or buy a refurbished phone for a fraction of the price. I am letting you in on a secret, go for refurbish. They work just as good as new. I haven’t had a problem with one. I never buy a phone full price. Always part of a deal. If you can’t get your phone for free or a steep discount from your provider, get an unlocked one that is refurbished! I will recommend BackMarket or Amazon. I will have a future article that will go more on this subject!
The solution, grabbing a cheap, unlocked phone (android) for a fraction of a price. I got an unlocked Motorola for around $40.00 from Walmart. I got it when it came down on rollback. I am always perusing, every week for a clearance. I am always seeing if it’s on sale. I am a queen of backup. If I can get another phone for cheaper, I am grabbing. Because if one goes out, atleast I can turn to backup. I try to get it on sale because I hate paying for anything full price. It’s a 2024 phone that does its job as a backup.
I already have phone service on my iphone, I don’t need another line. Yes, I am thinking of another line for business purposes but right now, one is enough. I can use the Motorola for downloading apps, games and browsing the internet. It helps to not drain my iphones storage and battery.
Another tip, if you have an older iphone, you can’t download the latest ios. Many apps and some jobs require you to have a modern phone. Why? Security, if you don’t have the latest ios, your phone is insecure. Also, you’re not getting the latest features and requirements. We don’t want to be in limbo in jeopardizing a job, especially shift work. I will talk about this later again.
That is where getting a cheap modern unlocked android comes in hand! You can get a good one to download the latest apps, meeting your job requirements.
With Gig Sites, Notifications Please
With these sites, you will receive notifications, updates, and alerts. Either through email, text or through the app. Stay on top of them. Make sure you have notifications on! I do for all of them.
If you approve a shift, make sure you know the details, date and time.
This is crucial as you will receive alerts that are critical to your shift. That is confirming your shift. Also, receiving another note to confirm (24 hours). Are you still able to make your shift kind of notes. You want to make sure you say yes. We don’t want to jeopardize losing a shift. You don’t want to panic but, you don’t want any negative marks on your account. I previously talked about canceling a shift. It’s the same, if you don’t give them the indication of making the shift, this may indicate unreliability or unprofessionalism. They spell it out to you.
I want you to have a glowing profile to receive more job opportunities. You don’t have to be stringent or on edge but, I don’t want them to deactivate your account or lessen job opportunities. The whole goal is for you to earn money. I want you to survive!
It is imperative to stay on top of notification and periodically check the app for notifications. They may send email or text alerts. Respond! Especially if you are confirmed for a shift, stay on top for details.

A Tip For Accepting And Rejecting A Job Offer For A Shift
With these sites, they often differ but all can be the same at the same time. When looking and selecting a shift, you will receive some type of approval. You will either have to wait (a small time frame to see if you’re approved). If approved, you may receive a job offer. I will go over the differences when listing sites below.
A tip, if you receive an offer and don’t want it, don’t click reject. Let it go away on its own. It’s ok if you select reject but I stray away from it. I am thinking, I don’t want these sites thinking, I am not willing to work a shift. I don’t want them to send less offers or deactivate my account. I’m just cautious. I don’t know all their rules (off top of my head) but it’s best to be safe then sorry. I figure, if you’re rejecting too many shifts, this may be a red flag. I just let them be and don’t select, accept or reject. I just let the offer go away naturally.
Top 6 Shift Sites To Start Earning
Now comes the great part, the apps where you can start to book your first shift! Hooray! Now, before I start, I will state my disclaimer. I personally reviewed and used these gigs. I have been booking shifts through these sites for over 6 months. I have made over $2,800. I wouldn’t recommend anything I haven’t used personally for myself. There are a lot of gig sites, I tried them all. The whole goal is to list the ones that really work. Not knocking the others but.. I got nowhere. These sites have the most opportunities and are legit paying shift jobs.
I will provide screenshots as proof for one. I always like to provide proof. I am not here to waste your time but to help.
I am helping a stranger right now to get his feet on track. He’s unemployed and have taken the time to personally take him to these shift jobs. He had zero income and without means. He has been searching for a job for over 2 years now with no luck! The same information I presented in this article is the same way I talked to him. Take advantage of shifts until you find your job. You can gain skills and income! They are flexible and can work according to your schedule. What’s better than that? These jobs are quite easy but physical. Yes, they require some smarts but not are white collar level deep thinking.
It’s all about surviving. I want you to take advantage of these sites today! I will provide the site (must download the app). You download app on Android (Google Play) or Apple (App Store).
Now before I begin, I will incorporate a variety of top search keywords to put in each of these gig sites. The goal is to maximize your reach to available opportunities. Take a look at recommended shifts.
KeyWords To Use On Gigs
Every gig site has a search. Make sure you select shifts if that option is available. For some, there is just a job. What you have to do is incorporate these keywords.. They will lead to the shifts.
Here are the following keywords. I put the keywords in order.
The top 5 give you the broadest search. I would recommend putting them all in, see what comes up. The goal is for you to see all available jobs in your area. If you don’t like a job, you can always refer a friend. There is always someone we know who may need extra income.

This is number #1, but in a way, has become a tie with Get Gigs and Job Stack. These two apps have moved up as the pinnacle 3.
Instawork is amazing. They don’t play. As soon as you launch the app, they ask for profile information, background check then you can start to select your shifts.
The key with Instawork, you want to look on the bottom left-hand corner select (SHIFT). In the search, play around with distance. Select your location and select the highest range you’re willing to travel. I selected the maximum 75 miles. This broadens your search.
In the search, incorporate key words. Start with General labor, warehouse associate, merchandiser and retail associate.
From there, you will see a list of shifts, details, time and location. Also, the requirements.
Approved For Shift
If approved for shift, you will receive notification. I recommend having notifications and checking app periodically for approval. Make sure you make note of all the rules (hiring organization and Instawork has provided).
General professional guidelines, no talking on the phone/texting (while on a shift). Showing up on time, great attitude, willinging to work hard, professional, excellent hygiene, courteous and willing to go extra mile. That means, if you notice something that is valuable, speak up about it. They’re monitoring and that go into glowing review.
Also, make sure you have the necessary clothes and tools (if required). If they say no hat, revealing clothes or visible tattoos, please comply.
Access Payment Info on Instawork?
You click on the bottom tab (MYWORK). Then select (EARNINGS) on top. From there you will see Transaction History. It lists the dates, the amount and the financial account you used for the direct deposit (savings/checkings).
After you complete your shift, it may take a few days for the hiring organization to approve your timesheet. Keep tabs on the app, checking or having notifications. Click on the Earnings tab, it will give you an account of the transaction.
If it’s been processed, then expect about 3-5 days for your payment to hit your bank account.
- Get Gigs (GIGSMART)

Similar to Instawork, GetGigs is a wonderful app to secure shifts. To use, you will set up a profile, background check, then you will be able to select shifts. To select shifts, click (BROWSE) then (SHIFTS) then incorporate search terms into the search bar.
There is a View Map and location. Can select either to select range to search. I click Location and then the maximum, 75 miles.
Bidding For The Win!
With Get Gigs, you have a bidding situation. Which is fine. This is what separates for Instawork, which is more instant approval. With Get Gigs, you have to bid and wait to see if you get a job offer (which is approval). Once you receive a job offer, you can accept or reject.
It is crucial to check your notifications! This is where your job offers lie. If you don’t check the app periodically or receive, notification/text alerts then… you will miss out! One thing is you want to act fast before someone else grabs the offer.
Just like Instawork, select the highest location range. Gives you the biggest range.
Approved For Shift
Once you accept the job offer, you’re officially hired! You will receive confirmations and expectations for the shift. This entails the next steps before. Just like Instawork, confirming your shift 24/7 beforehand. That’s why it is crucial to have notifications on.
Clockin/Clockout on App
Before you start your shift, you will be required to clock-in on the app. Please do so. Yes, the manager will have a timesheet and can clock-in/clock you out (account for your hours). I do it both ways. I clock-in on the app and take a snapshot of the app. The manager on hand will go over all the details with you in the review of the job. Take careful note. If you’re unclear, you can pull them to the side to clarify.
Although you can’t use your phone during the shift, you can check when you’re on break. You will notice on the app, a clock tracking your time and the amount you have made. I don’t know how much you’re going to be paid per hour but it’s a great gage.
Access Payment Info on GigSmart?
After you complete your shift(s) you will be required to submit a timesheet. This is a staple of Gigsmart. They would like you to submit a copy of your timesheet through a message. When you complete your shift, take a screenshot of your timesheet. Then upload it through message. You can leave a simple message. For instance, it was great meeting you today. Attached is a timesheet for today’s shift ( as requested).
The timesheet is your proof. It indicates when you clocked in and clocked out. If you have issues clocking on Gigsmart, you can submit your timesheet as proof. Yes, you can manually edit your clockin/clockout in Gigsmart. Still, it has to match what is submitted on your timesheet. Remember, the hiring organization has to approve all of it. They are the ones that can edit as needed.
From there, you will receive notifications about when your timesheet is approved. Then you can check the app a little later to see if your payment has been posted. You will click (WALLET) and then scroll down to (Earnings & Payouts). Once the timesheet is approved, It usually takes a day to clear, you can check your wallet. You will notice your payment posted and in transit. You can check the app later to see it turn toward paid. That paid indications means you’re check is heading to direct deposit. I don’t know the time frame. It can be between 3-5 days.
I haven’t had any issues in receiving payment in a timely manner. You have to account for holidays and your financial institution. Now… a little side talk about Branch, where you’re check goes to from GigSmart.
Download Branch App To Get Your Money
In order to receive your money, you have to access Branch. Branch is a 3rd party service that is partnered with GigSmart. They handle all your direct deposit. This is where you can access your money. When signing up with GigSmart, you already sign up with Branch. You have to have the app downloaded to move or access your funds.
Branch is located on your wallet. You will see Branch Account *******0000 then the Manage button. Click the manage button. It will direct you to the Branch app. You will have to sign up through the app. Make sure you write down and store credentials in a secure location. You want to access your money with no issues.
Once you access your Branch Account, you will see 3 options on the bottom. Click on 1st, Wallet. Here, you will see Balance. Once your payment hits your Branch account (from Gig Smart), you can access your funds. You will see your payment in the balance.
Example, you got paid $245.00. Your balance will be $245.00. Now… What do I do from here? How can I get these funds?
Of course, Branch isn’t your financial institution. You have to move your funds to a financial institution. I know, that is pretty much what you want to do. Move your money to your bank. The solution, click the move funds icon in the middle. From there, a list of options will pop up.
Forgo the debit card, instant, why? That involves a fee. Unless you need money asa then go ahead. Be careful on this step and don’t accidentally click. You can’t reverse.
What you will click is Another Bank. You will have 3-5 business days and for free. This is what we want! From there, you will enter the amount you will move (transfer) to your bank. In this example. $245.00. Then you will swipe up, indicating transaction complete!
You can then check your bank account later to see the funds in your account. Direct deposit complete.
In Branch, you will have access to all your transactions. This is important for tax purposes and tracking your income.

- Job Stack (People Ready)

This app really is the business. I have grown to love the heck out of this one. I saw a job offer for the PGA tour and it had a gazillion different shifts for it! Now, I love my sports and know working for the PGA would be life! It would light up you resume like no other.
JobStack offers a great variety of positions. With this app, you will click (Book jobs) (on the bottom). Select the highest range distance. In location, put your area or area you desire to work. Then put in those keywords. You will see underneath a list of icons, similar to a calendar. You will see day, dates and number of jobs. Click on the days to see what’s disclosed.
Give an example. On Monday, August 13, 5 jobs. That’s amazing! You click and you will see a list of options for the day. Maybe a general labor job in Springfield MA for $230.00. A cook job in Boston MA for $170. You will see the list of details. Now before you start selecting….
Instant and I’m Interested
You got to know difference between I’m interested (similar to a bid/inquiry) and Instant. With I’m Interested, you’re putting in your inquiry to the hiring organization. It’s up to them to accept or reject your inquiry. If accepted, you will be hired. Cool huh.
With Instant, you’re instantly hired. I know that is crazy. No waiting time. You have to think things through with the instant. You have to be committed because you don’t want to end up quitting. I talked about the red flags or rejecting/quitting/no show. I don’t want you to be kicked off these apps! Never block your income sources. Never!
Once approved, your shifts will showed up under My shifts. Similar to the other gig sites, you will receive notes to confirm your shift beforehand.
Just like the other recommendations, sign your timesheets. Take screenshots and keep for safekeeping. I would say up until you receive payment in your bank account.
With this app, I worked one shift so far. I received another job and got hired 3 days later. Hence the reason I’ve been slacking on booking more shifts on this site. I will in the future. In the event, I worked a shift at LOWES distributing plant, assembling batteries and chargers in lawn mowers. Not bad. I provide my proof as inspiration. You work for notable companies that can enhance your resume. Also, grow your skills.
Access Payment Info on JobStack?
Well, we were spoiled with the other apps. On JobStack, there isn’t a section that tracks your payment. You have to rely on the payment showing up to your bank account. Take note of the financial details you include when signing up. Is it your checking or savings account you link for the direct deposit. You’re going to have to write it down.
I have a document of all my financial transactions. I have a lot of places sending me money from all over. It can be crazy. I have an excel spreadsheet that tracks all of my money. Yes, I can use my advance books for accounting but I am not managing money for business. I done all of that in my previous job, I don’t need to be that sophisticated, lol. I don’t need to do queries, just track. You can do the same. Excel or Google sheets. Just keep everything organized!
Onto number 4! Fantastic 4.
- Wonolo
If you’re into food service, you would love Wonolo! Click (Find Work) (icon on the bottom). On top, enter keywords. Select location. You will see a list. On right, you may see option for multi. This is great for anyone who wants a steady part-time job or steady shifts! If you select a shift, they may ask if you can work for multiple days not one! You will see an estimate of your earnings.
For example, I saw a retail merchandiser job. The estimate for 80 days is $12,969.00. Working as a retail merchandiser, especially in Wal-Mart is lucrative. The pay is amazing. It’s labor intensive but fun! I work as part-time retail merchandiser in Wal-Mart and love every part of the job. I get to build displays, track inventory, account for orders, all the fun stuff for the brands. I have big responsibility, all worth it!
I am a natural organizer; it comes with the territory. I get to make decisions and talk to managers about changes. My job is to make sure you leave Wal-Mart happy. I go to different Wal-Mart, all helping to improve them all! Big time responsibility!
I have a natural knack as a manager. I have an MBA, it’s in the DNA. I love inventory and merchandise. I know products, display, marketing. What it takes to sell. Tracking and understanding why we buy. Why stuff ends up in your cart. That’s in my blood.
Just giving you some advice. I want you to survive in life. Just like all our 1st jobs was either in fast food or retail, I want you to have a variety of skills. That way in a downturn, you can turn to a secondary job. That is what I’ve done.
Until I get the job in alignment with my background and skills, these jobs will do. They are border on my passions. I love retail and love everything about a home, selling gutters! I just want to get back to where I was. Head of marketing, managing people. Delegating, making big time decisions. Until then, I love building different skills in these shifts!

You will click Payments tab on the bottom. There, you will see the amount paid. Also, can click on Account, then profile, and see Money Paid in the middle. All information is disclosed.
- Jobble
I am be honest with this one, this was a favorite but has since slacked off a bit. Sure, they had a lot of good shifts. I worked a Walgreens reset merchandiser position which I loved. They were offereing a lot of different ones for a while but has since slowed down. They have a lot of good jobs but we all have our top apps for jobs. We are here for shift work!
If you want to give this one a whirl, which I recommend, here is how to do it. Click (Jobs) on bottom then enter keywords. Distance willing to travel, set to 100. Select location, then see what you get.
From here you will get confirmation (if approved for shift). You can track everything under (My Work). On top you will see (Applied), which are the jobs you applied. (Shifts), show your approved and accepted shifts. (History) covers the history of all your shifts. Under history, it shows all your details. If you were hired, quit or removed. Removed means the hiring organization decided to remove you from the shift. Don’t get upset! The shift may have been filled or they reached over quota and didn’t realize it. It’s never your fault. (Earnings) tracks payments for your shifts. If you worked your shift and completed, your earnings (payments) will show up under earnings.
Clock In and Clock Out On Jobble, Submit Timesheet
It is extremely crucial to clock in and clock out on Jobble. Please allow location to be set and notifications. Once you arrived to shift, clock in. Double check to make sure you’re clocked in. screenshot. On break, make sure you’re still clocked in.
Take Note Of Hiring Organization Contact Details
Take note of the hiring organization name, manager name, title, contact details, and email. Also, make sure their is a timesheet! You will be required to submit a time sheet. Screen shot your timesheet and submit to Jobble. This is crucial to getting paid!

Disclaimer On Jobble, Getting Paid
Now here is a disclaimer, I worked Walgreens job but had a discrepancy about getting paid. I clocked in when I got to the site. The thing, I turn off my phone (to stay in compliance). This was no big deal, I know I would stay clocked in like with the other gig sites.
For some reason, when I completed my shift and tried to clock out, it indicated I wasn’t clocked in? This baffled me. I know myself. I always double check! I know I clocked in. Buzz kill!
I reached out to Jobble customer support. I was marked as a no show because there was no proof of clocking in. I gave Jobble all the proof of working this position. I am still in communication with them. I’ve did receive a response from customer service, stating they would investigate. I’ve haven’t heard back from them since.
This is concerning but… I am still on them about this. I worked the shift, payment must be rendered. It was my goof not to take note of contact information, but I will be moving forward.
I say all of this so you don’t run into the same issues. If you track all your information, clock in/out and screenshot and screenshot timesheet, you should be good.
I am not knocking Jobble as I was offered a job pretty quick and they did have some good shifts. They have slacked off a bit but it may be my area and availability of jobs. The same might not apply to you. Give this site a whirl. Other than these issues, it’s still a favorite and one I encourage to find shifts.
- Observa
Last but not least, this site is not for someone who is looking to earn $200 a day. No, its a site for quick gigs. Say, you have 1 hour to kill (pick up your son and in the area, let’s see if I can earn some money). This is a site where I expect you to not burn gas and have downtime. Why? The jobs are usually 15 minutes-1 hour. Some may be up to 3 hours but it’s in the first time frame. You can expect to see a lot of $18.00 to take pictures (audit) for 30-45 minutes.
Give you an example. You plan on going to Stop & Shop. You usually take 30-35 minutes in the store. Why not get paid. While you can’t shop and do this shift at the same time, you can kill 2 birds with one stone. If you have some downtime and would like to earn some extra money, why not.
Instead of waiting for your son/daughter in the car, texting up a storm, you can use that time to earn money. They are very simple jobs to do and generally require taking pictures (audits of inventory).
What you will do is click list, scroll through to see available shifts and locations.
Conclusion
This was a mouthful but all worth it. A lot of people are struggling to find a job. We all see the gas prices, out of control. The economy has been picking up a bit but it’s not booming. In the event, things have changed since COVID. We have to be smarter. Yes, Doordash, Uber Eats, Amazon, have all been secondary crutches but have been flooded. It’s hard to get any of these jobs.
Many people have panicked, not knowing where to turn. I have provided a great avenue that is just as good. I want you to take advantage of this! I am helping 1 person right now. I personally took him to 2 shifts. I sacrificed sleep to help him and he has been grateful ever since!
He has been struggling to find employment, working these shifts came right on time! He has since received job offers for other shifts, boosting his spirits.
I was on one shift and one of the managers offered a young lady an offer she couldn’t refuse, to work steady shifts in locations near where they lived. She broke down crying because this is what she was looking for. She needed the money. This warmed my heart so much. Yes, I was offered to work but he knew the distance was too far from me. He loved how both of us worked. We were the top 2 workers on the shift. Having high favors is what I want you to have! They are watching you and you never know what will arise from these shifts!
This has been my attitude all my life, be the hardest worker. It has paid off. I have been offered more responsibility and offers from all my jobs and shift work. It was the same with my previous employer, I received 3 promotions (technically 4) over my duration. I received so many offers, many I had to turn down because of distance/time.
Please, give each of these gig sites some time. If you never worked a shift before, give it a whirl. You can build amazing skills and connections. I have worked for Lowes, WalMart, Walgreens, PriceChopper, and NAPA to name a few.
We are mid through 2026, 2027 will be here before we know it. The time is now to build our wealth. Not just savings but wealth. Assets, homes, cars, investments, properties, and savings. Having things in your name is a great feeling. You’re working your butt off, why not invest in yourself and your future. Leave a lasting legacy for your family.
I will let you in on a secret, these shifts have been a beacon for my emergency car repairs! It’s always one thing after another. Go in for an oil change, they find something unexpected. You want take care of it right away because the longer you wait, the worst the problem! The last thing you want to affect is your engine. The lowest cost is $10,000. You can’t run without one!
I give advice because I care! I don’t want you to make foolish mistakes. When I was in McDonald’s talking to someone, 2 young men overheard my conversation. I asked if they were looking for work, they said yes, in construction! I said you’re talking to the right person and directed to all of these gig sites. They were so excited! I had 1 sign up right there in McDonalds, he even got on the phone with verification. How influential huh! I wrote all the apps on McDonalds napkins and told them the instructions.
This is how dedicated I am! When I am out, I am always yapping about gig sites. I know someone needs a job, this is at the top of my list. I don’t want anyone to be struggling and without shelter. It’s a dog eat world, we are meant to survive. Especially if you have kids, you have to have income rolling. You have a family to feed and protect, not just yourself. Pets, the same!
